If ever the history
of Mohiniyattam is written in future, the contribution of Bharati Shivaji
to this exquisite and graceful classical dance form of Kerala would certainly
be a special chapter ...... The
stunning grace of Bharati Shivaji's Mohiniyattam never fails to charm
the audience .... Highly appealing always ..... The aesthetics of angled
movement shown in profile, the dips and elevations of the body and the
swaying lasya of the torso in Bharati's dance heightened appeal ..... |

A thorough professional
approach coupled with an admirable presentation of the items compelled
the audience to stick to their seats all through .... Passed off without
a moment of dullness. The
festival opened with Bharati Shivaji's exquisite Mohiniyattam presentation.
Looking every inch the charming Mohini, Bharati presented leisurely an
ornate vision of Mohiniyattam, with delicate use of the hastas and well
etched adavus and precise and undulating circular body bends and charming
dips the dancer was truly enchanting ..... The
stamp of the Guru could be seen in the standard of their dancing, sober
stage personalities and group coordination. Some of them have imbibed
the soft way of arriving at the samam that marks Bharati Shivaji's own
delicate treatment of nritta ..... the dance recital served as a reminder
of guru Bharati Shivaji's contribution in disseminating the art in bringing
great refinement and variety to the presentation of Mohiniyattam. The
white & gold skirts of Bharati Shivaji and her disciple-daughter flowed
harmoniously in the undulating circles of Mohiniyattam, the most sensual
of the styles. It was a graceful end to an enlightening trip. Shivaji
was the complete embodiment of this most feminine of dance styles. Joined
by her daughter on one occasion the symmetric unison gave the dance a
new edge. Curves,
sweeps, a gloriously swaying gait, and somehow a sense of joy and well-being:
Mohiniattam as presented by [Bharati Shivaji] and her disciple-daughter
Vijayalakshmi. Their duet as friends musing on the identity of a handsome
man was delectable. This was a radiant climax??Bharati Shivaji ended her
exquisite revelation of Mohiniattam - the Kerala-based form with a luscious,
curving whirlwind of rhythm that she softly explained as "the union
of the soul with the absolute". The
audience was amazed when instead of Swan-girls in usual ballet skirts,
barefooted beauties in Indian sarees with jasmine flowers in black hair
floated on the stage?..their movements were magnificent?they told a love
story, taken with delight by the spectators. As for the contents on the
performance, the ardour on the stage was stronger, the colours were brighter
and the artistes more passionate. The brave experiment of Guru Bharati
Shivaji was a great success in her motherland. The sophisticated audience
in Moscow received it with ovation. It turns out to be so pleasant to
destroy the steadiest stereotypes.
